In 1991, Prince Carlo Caracciolo and his wife Violante Visconti commissioned the famous architect Gae Aulenti to convert the former 17th-century granary into an elegant and understated villa.
The painter Tullio Pericoli also made his contribution. Located within the castle walls, the jewel of the place is undoubtedly the romantic English garden of about two hectares. It was designed by Lauro Marchetti, curator of the Gardens of Ninfa, and was later developed and maintained by the famous English landscaper Dan Pearson.
Total freedom seems to be the philosophy of the place called "wild-care", in a green and white palette enhanced with touches of blue and pink. A subtle art of gardening where the hand of man stands imperceptibly giving the feeling of a wild nature.
Pure white blooms are seen in the wisteria 'Wisteria Floribunda', hydrangeas, jasmine, roses 'Sally Holmes', 'Iceberg', 'Alfred Carrière', foxgloves, Japanese anemones, columbines and annuals for flower beds.
Cascades of gunnera, arums, irises, water lilies and pomegranates add to this romantic staging.
In 1999, Dan Pearson's pupil, Stuart Barfoot was hired to continue to work with the same sensitivity and respect for the natural setting while extending its palette to include purple.
Since 2013, Angelo Mariani and Angelo Alessandroni, trained by Stuart, have been ensuring the maintenance of the garden in continuity with the original work.
A project to extend the English garden associated with the renovation of the Santa Maria di Torrecchia chapel is currently underway.
